CLASSROOM!

Last week, I told my students, "From next week, every English class will start with a student's voice before mine. After the attendance, a short talk, and then the lesson. A hand shot up almost instantly. "Ma'am... about what?" "About anything under the sky," I replied, "provided the sky doesn't fall on our classroom decorum!" The room erupted. "Wooow!"... "Seriously?"... "That's nice!" Everyone was excited. Then came my little plot twist. "We'll start with zigzagging through the attendance register." The "Wooow!" suddenly became "Ohhh". Some faces were busy calculating. Some were praying their turn was still a month away. A few looked at the attendance register as though it had personally betrayed them. Today was Monday. It's Aarvi's turn. The girl who is permanently powered by invisible batteries, always restless, always smiling, with two cute dimples that app...

A Teacher's Window to Growing Minds Classes began today after a long summer break. Unlike every other reopening day, Maulik and Aarav didn't disappear into their favourite corner of the classroom. They marched straight to the centre, dropped their bags dramatically on the desk and wished me. Suddenly Aarav popped up- "Ma'am, you read a lot. Have you ever read Friedrich Nietzsche?" "Not really," I replied. "That's not my stuff in fact." Before I could complete my sentence, another book appeared. The Antichrist. And just like that, the conversation took a sharp turn—from summer holidays to Nietzsche, then to Hitler, philosophy, ideology and history. Trying to poke a hole in his argument, I casually remarked, "I don't agree with people who have no emotions for others." "Oh no, Ma'am!" His volume instantly do...
Morning, ten minutes before class time, the class teacher steps into the room, carrying a calm smile and a heart ready to receive every child. One by one, the students walk in—some with bright smiles and cheerful wishes, some with dreams and quiet hopes, some still holding on to yesterday’s unfinished thoughts, and a few silently carrying worries heavier than their school bags. And then came my little story of the day. He walked in, kept his bag aside, and gently rested his head on the desk—as if the morning itself felt too heavy. I went up to him, What happened? Nothing, Madam, just not feeling good. Suddenly, he looked up and said— Madam, today I thought of not coming to school, but then I imagined—you would be upset because PT is on, and you would ask so many questions… and of course, the diary entry signed by parents! So I thought better to come. So, you mean to say, you came to school today just because you didn’t want me to be upset, or to avoid my questions? He paused,smil...
Those Tears Still Follow Me… Some moments do not end when the day ends. They do not leave us when the bell rings, when the classroom becomes silent, or when the school gate closes. They remain. It was PTM day. The corridors were filled with parents, children, report cards, questions, expectations, and anxious little faces waiting to know what would be said about them. Among them came one of the most vibrant and lively girls of my class. She entered proudly with her mother, carrying the innocence of childhood and the nervousness of a student who had just stepped into Class 9 from Class 8. She had always been a child with sparkling eyes, cute dimples, and a heart full of unwritten stories. Before they even reached me properly, her mother asked, “Meri beti class mein kaise karti hai?” The child looked at me. That look was fragile. Her eyes were pleading silently, as if they were saying, “Madam, please understand me… please protect me… please tell her I am trying.” I handed...

My dear friend Sheetal entered the staffroom with a delightful surprise, her hands adorned with a collection of vibrant green glass bangles. With a warm smile, she distributed these delicate bangles to each of us, explaining that it is the sacred month of Shravan, a time when wearing green bangles holds special significance. As I slipped the cool glass onto my wrists, I was suddenly enveloped by a tidal wave of nostalgia. Each bangle seemed to hold a piece of my past, unlocking more than a dozen precious memories. Scenes from my childhood, festive celebrations, the joyful laughter of friends and family, and the serene beauty of monsoon rains—all these moments came rushing back, sparkling vividly in my mind like the green bangles now adorning my wrist. It was a heartwarming reminder of tradition, friendship, and the beautiful memories that shape our lives.
Class XII Arts/Com. Subject- English. Topic - Poem - My Mother At Sixty Six. Participants - The emotional bundles stuffed in uniforms -  my naughty , lovely students. 'Describe your mother in a single word'. The entire class went on silence for a few seconds. Unhurriedly , taking their own good time they started tossing their answers.... Don't repeat, something new.....I demanded.... Suddenly , one girl stood up and professed " MY MOTHER IS A MAGICIAN"....... OMG! Pin drop silence..... The classroom, green board, my chalk smeared hands....everything...everything vanished. Bell rang , I left the class. Only the girl and her  word MAGICIAN revolves around me now.

Of Confusions...........

‘’ The most disciplined, well organized and a charismatic class with a fantastic Class teacher who doesn’t just teach but performs miracles in the class room. ‘’ The Boss praises so. Inside the class room, The real tug of war starts. Morning Prayer…. Meditation…. Usual process of reading practice…. The real war begins with the question and answer session. As usual Delma with a sleepy face, “I am sorry ma’m.” Kelzang with his cigarette stained lips tries to answer the question. Lhap Tshering with a typical face that fantasize each moment looks around in a miffed way. A sudden giggling comes out from Chimi and Karma pointing their fingers secretly to Nida’s drawer. Oh My! condoms!; morning surprise. It’s just to polish my shoes and not for anything else ,he utters. Anyway it’s a great innovation! Shame on little scientists of U A who already have the label ‘ innovators and winners’. Wangchuk’s drawer half opened with a label ‘Mother fucker’. Why Karma a...

Life at this end………

Life changes ….. In the most unexpected moment, in the most unexpected way. All desires and dreams seem to be at odds with one another. Certain circumstances repeat themselves without any reason. The space and freedom remind me about my path, shedding my old self, just like a transition. “So how does life treat you? “ This question started aching and echoing my mind more and more, than ever before. And it has become an object of my meditation. Most often, deep in my heart I think of my friend who has thrown this question to me…..who is gifted with immeasurable insights along with his intelligence, who remains remarkably unruffled in utter situations and with whom I can be more myself…… Since life cannot be made to conform to a system, when it can’t be forced to a frame work, everything goes like brilliant utopian ideas. These days I follow the path of divine madness, where no balance is kept, still balanced with the very being and nature….with worldly enjoyment and divine tr...

Walking across a Bhutanese evening

Image
Indian art on a Bhutan truck. Indian truck artists along the border thrive on Bhutanese truck paintings. So 'Bikram Arts' has Indian and Bhutanese telephone numbers:) These numbers belong to the truck owner. Bhutan has just two mobile service providers. so he has it both on the truck. My friend who runs the only air-condition shop bought a new van. The only van in town that delivers free. Walking into the heart of our little, but growing town which now ends at the last building you see in the far end. A few yards away from the monastery, I spotted this BenTen and ManU fan. While the one walking away has the 'evening duty' to light butter lamps... its playtime for the others. With a mantra on her lips, angay (grandmother) walked around the chorten... Though imperfect and with jaded borders... Once the feet of Buddha, life is simple. Let us go, then you and I, when the evening is spread out against the sky. As the evening sun began to set across a lazy Sunday, it was tim...
